Picking a Horse

The ABC site has an excellent Election Guide up and running.

Being a newcomer to my electorate of Jagajaga it's been an indispensable source of information for me on the history of the seat and it's position within both a state and federal context. All that I really knew was that I was at last living in a Labor seat (held by Jenny Macklin with a margin of about 5%) after years of toughing it out in safe Liberal electorates or those that swung the wrong way. At last my vote can account for something.

Some interesting facts I've turned up:

» It's the only electorate in the country which starts with the letter 'J'
» It's been held by Labor since its creation in 1984 in spite of the fact it includes Ivanhoe within its bounds. Ivanhoe is boat-shoe and Rugby jersey central in Melbourne.
» Jaga Jaga was "one of the eight principal Aboriginal chiefs to sign Batman's Land Deed. His name crops up frequently in stories of the early phase of settlement as an individual greatly feared by settlers. Captured by Henry Gisbourne on 11 January 1840, he escaped to continue his fight against the European invasion. A shadowy figure who avoided Port Phillip officialdom with the result that, like so many other insurgents throughout the continent, his exploits are poorly documented in the historic record" (source)
And so of course he gets an electorate named after him. That should settle the debt owed to him and his people...

Thanks for the interesting link. I'm apparently in the very safe Liberal area of Curtin (Perth). The "affluent" suburbs in between the city and the sea - although we're by no means affluent, we just like being close to the beach, and to the coffee/shopping areas. It's funny, I've noticed lately just how many more mail drops we're getting from locals running in the elections. We never actually hear from them when it isn't election time though!
