What does that dream mean anyway?
So apparently sinus congestion can make you feel like your teeth are going to fall out (!)
This was a welcome piece of information when I visited my dentist, afraid that I was going to need some serious work because my top teeth have been feeling just plain odd over the past week or so. About the same time that I've been grappling with a mild sinus issue as a result of a loitering cold.
I often have that dream that all my teeth fall out - it's probably my most common archetypal dream - and so I'm a little sensitive about any sensations in my mouth, as though it could all really happen at any moment. The fact that I had to have root canal treatment on a tooth last year certainly feeds that fear too.
Did I mention that I'm also a nighttime teeth grinder? I've done it for so long and so consistently that I cracked and chipped a tooth without even noticing it. Damn nerves.
So I've become super conscientious about oral hygiene - electric toothbrush, flossing, rinsing, inter dentals too. I just know I'll become a crazy mother around this kind of stuff.
But my one comfort is that teen-soap-nerd-poster-girl Anna Stern¹ also values oral hygiene:
Summer (to Anna): You're like flossing... at school.

honestly, I hadn't even been taught how to *floss* properly until she showed me. all that business with wrapping around her fingers for tension was totally new to me.

Katy I have that dream too! It is also my main recurring one. It means we are control freaks. Hey, I read Freud, that's what he said. It makes sense tho because losing your teeth is something you can't control, and once you lose them there's not much you can do about it - they're gone forever. Hmmm, and I am increasingly a teeth grinder too... but that is stress that I *should* be able to control. Or coffee intake. Or something.

Katy and McGregg, I have the dream too!! I saw somebody (on Oprah I think, how embarrassing is that confession) discussing its Freudian meanings and they said it can also be interpreted as meaning that we are perfectionists, ambitious and over anxious about life (which all fit under the umbrella of control).

I just pulled my copy of The Interpretation of Dreams off the shelf, and beyond Freud's claims that teeth falling out equate with masturbatory fantasies, or someone else pulling a tooth out standing in for castration (which I suppose is linked to a loss of control or power), the only persistent explanation for these dreams was due to 'dental stimulus' manifesting itself in dream content.
So that would link the nocturnal teeth grinding with the dreams.
