Veronica Mars is smarter than ... most everything else

I've been meaning to blog about this for several months, so i think it's about time I broke the blogsilence and championed my latest and greatest media obsession.

The titular heroine. She's a marshmallow.

It may never be aired on terrestrial TV in Australia (even though Nine have bought the rights) which is a great shame because it is vastly superior to 95.25% of the American series which end up on the commercial stations here (and on par with Arrested Development). It's smart, funny, well cast and expertly written but suffers from the scheduling woes of appearing on one of the smaller US networks (UPN) and in its second season is screened in the same time slot as ratings goliath Lost.

Unlike its ratings rival, Veronica Mars uses a mystery narrative to actually pose questions and answer them in a satisfying way, while leaving threads open for later development. Instead of drawing out a season long mystery into a second round purely to exploit ratings potential, VM climaxed in an explosive and richly satisfying finale which brought together several disparate elements of the overarching mysteries and rewarded the loyal viewer for following the twists, turns and red herrings along the way. That it ends in more questions simply attests to its investment in the pleasure of the cliffhanger without inflicting the actual torment, pain and disappointment of hanging from an actual cliff.

But I've kind of avoided the central points here. Because describing this series is quite a task, not because it is so dense and complicated, but because like so many great texts, it sounds kinda ... lame when you try to simplify it. So I'll get that out of the way now.

Bubbly teen turns angsty outcast turns part-time PI. Twin Peaks meets Nancy Drew meets 21 Jump Street meets The O.C meets CSI. Densely pop-literate. Hard-boiled Buffy. Clever textual melting pot. It sounds like a mess, but it's not, thankfully.

Make no mistake. This is Teen TV and if you have a problem with that then you might struggle to connect with VM. But unlike The O.C which was always a kind of guilty pleasure made somewhat legitimate by the random carrots of witticism popping up from its otherwise weak, undernourished soil, Veronica Mars is the wormy, mushroomy, fecund compost which makes beautiful things grow by design. Don't look too deep into the gardening metaphors for any clue about the series. This stuff just comes out of my brain for no apparent reason. Go with it.

If you like Buffy then you should know that Joss Whedon wants you to watch it. If you're not down with the Slayer, then just take MY word for it. And acquire it any way you know how (the DVD set for season one is available from North American stores if you have the dollars). Creator Rob Thomas (not of Matchbox 20 shame) is an author of YA fiction, taught at High School, and has a History degree. He's an all-round bang-up guy!
